It is lightly golden with a fine, creamy head and a nose of malty vanilla shortead. Its mouth feel is creamy with sweet biscuit at the front. There's smooth, subtle nuts and oak at the middle and a mild, sustained whisky warmth to its gentle (7 per cent alcohol) spiced finish –and nary a sign of bitterness. Firstewed in 1998 to celeate Shepherd Neame's tercentenary, this copper-onze, bottle conditioned beauty is an intense yet uniquely intricate offering thrice-hopped during theewing process. This adds rich resinous notes and spikes of citrus to a moreish strong ale already rife with notes of liquorice, Masala wine, caramel and spicy orange. A frisson of dark fruit freshens the finish. Serve with smoked cheese.
